Centineo in line to star alongside Sweeney in ‘Gundam’
Noah Centineo is in negotiations to star opposite Sydney Sweeney in Legendary Entertainment's forthcoming live-action adaptation of the iconic anime "Gundam". The sci-fi feature is being directed by Jim Mickle, the creator and showrunner of Netflix's "Sweet Tooth", who has also penned the film's script.
If finalised, the deal would mark Centineo's second collaboration with Legendary, as he is currently filming the studio's "Street Fighter" adaptation. Legendary has not commented on the talks, citing the sensitive nature of ongoing dealmaking.
Originally broadcast in 1979, "Gundam" is set in the Universal Century, a future era in which overpopulation forces humanity to build space colonies. Tensions rise as the colonists seek independence, sparking a war fought with giant humanoid robots known as mechas.
The upcoming film is centred on a character played by Sweeney, who is said to be closely involved in casting her co-lead. Industry sources indicate that the narrative will follow two characters positioned on opposing sides of an interplanetary conflict, drawing comparisons to a Romeo-and-Juliet-style dynamic.
Legendary had previously held discussions with "Outer Banks" actor Drew Starkey for the role, though negotiations did not progress.
Centineo rose to prominence with Netflix's hit romance "To All the Boys I've Loved Before", and later appeared as Atom Smasher in "Black Adam". This year, he featured in A24's war drama "Warfare". He is also preparing to headline the upcoming "Rambo" prequel, scheduled to begin filming early next year.
Legendary's "Street Fighter," distributed by Paramount, is set for release on 16 October 2026.
