Road transport workers in Rangpur have called an indefinite strike in eight districts under Rangpur division from tomorrow morning to protest the “killing” of a bus driver in Chattogram yesterday.

The strike will start from 6:00am tomorrow, Akhter Hossain Badal, president of Rangpur divisional committee of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation, told The Daily Star this evening.

A bus driver, Jalaluddin, 55, was allegedly beaten to death by a group of plainclothes men who claimed to be detectives in Patiya upazila of Chattogram early yesterday.

Jalaluddin, hailing from Dinajpur, was a driver of a Shyamoli Paribahan NR Travels bus.

However, the detective branches of both the district and Chattogram Metropolitan Police have denied the allegation, claiming no drive was carried out by the DB in Patiya.
