Cox’s Bazar Municipality showcases progress on local economic development and tourism
Cox's Bazar Municipality organised a regional campaign and training programme titled "Local Economic Development and Sustainable Tourism Growth" on November 22, 2025.
The event aimed to support the local economy, strengthen sustainable tourism and promote public–private collaboration.
Md Rezaul Maqsud Jahedi, Secretary of the Local Government Division, attended as the chief guest. More than 200 participants joined, including representatives from Cox's Bazar Municipality, Maheshkhali, Teknaf and Chakaria, along with private-sector leaders, women entrepreneurs, youth and media.
The programme was presided over by Administrator Shamim Al Imran. Special guests included Mahmudul Hasan, A B M Shawkat Iqbal Shaheen, Dr Monira Begum, Dr Roksana Tarannum and Helal Hussain.
Parvez Mohammad Asheque delivered the welcome remarks. Wahedur Rahman presented the LED model and PRABRIDDHI's achievements. Administrator Shamim Al Imran highlighted progress in digital services, tourism facilitation and municipal management. Private-sector partners shared their experience of working with PRABRIDDHI.
A documentary screening and thematic discussions focused on sustainability, local innovation and the LED framework.
Secretary Md Rezaul Maqsud Jahedi said, "Local Economic Development deserves greater priority for mobilizing local resources, enhancing business competitiveness, and accelerating local growth. Based on its proven impact, this initiative will be expanded to district-level municipalities."
He added, "The 37% increase in revenue in Bogura Municipality during the current phase can serve as a model to be replicated nationwide."
He said the Municipal Capacity Index will guide resource allocation and encourage performance-based competition.
Special guests praised PRABRIDDHI's contribution in seven municipalities. They recommended integrating climate-responsive strategies, stronger waste management and long-term sustainability measures.
Administrator Shamim Al Imran said, "Our aim is to establish a sustainable municipal business model that communities can operate independently, ensuring long-term continuity beyond the project period."
Helal Hossain said, "Swisscontact works in over 40 countries to advance sustainable economic development. Through PRABRIDDHI, we have strengthened municipal leadership, promoted entrepreneurship, and enhanced local governance. With continued efforts, achieving inclusive growth in Bangladesh is within reach."
An exhibition showcased development initiatives and PRABRIDDHI's work. Attendees visited the One-Stop Service Booth to learn about trade licence renewal, holding tax payment and other services.
A two-day LED training programme followed the seminar. Officials and private-sector representatives took part in exercises on local challenges, economic opportunities and LED planning.
The event ended with commitments from municipal leaders and development partners to scale successful LED models and promote sustainable economic development across Bangladesh.
