UIU holds seminar on earthquake risk and mitigation

Professor Dr Md Mujibur Rahman, Director of the Center for Smart Infrastructure Resilience and Sustainability, presided over the session. Dr Rumana Afrin delivered the vote of thanks.

The Department of Civil Engineering at United International University organised a seminar titled "Earthquake Risk and its Mitigation in Urban Areas of Bangladesh" on November 22, 2025, at the UIU campus in United City, Madani Avenue, Dhaka.

Professor Dr Mehedi Ahmed Ansari of BUET's Department of Civil Engineering and Founder Director of BUET-JIDPUS attended as the chief guest. Professor Dr Md Mujibur Rahman, Director of the Center for Smart Infrastructure Resilience and Sustainability, presided over the session. Dr Rumana Afrin delivered the vote of thanks.

In his address, the chief guest discussed Bangladesh's current earthquake risk using geological and geotechnical data. He outlined engineering measures to improve building resilience and explained the Detailed Engineering Assessment process, which helps identify structural vulnerabilities. He stressed the need to retrofit older buildings and introduced the colour-coded RMG Initial Building Assessment Summary as a tool for identifying structures needing urgent attention.

The seminar offered students a detailed understanding of earthquake assessments and resilient construction practices. It linked DEA, retrofitting and practical evaluation methods to highlight the importance of evidence-based engineering.

Faculty members, students, officials, academicians, journalists and other guests attended the programme.
