After AF Rahman Hall, smoking now banned at DU’s Zahurul Huq Hall premises
After AF Rahman Hall, Dhaka University's Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall has imposed a ban on smoking in public spaces within its premises.
According to a notice issued by the hall authorities today, students caught smoking in public areas under the hall's jurisdiction will face fines ranging from Tk 50 to Tk 300, in line with existing laws.
It also warned that anyone found consuming or possessing illegal drugs will be expelled from the hall in the presence of their guardians.
Md Faruk Shah, provost of the hall, told The Daily Star that the decision came following complaints from non-smoker students.
"We cannot encourage smoking by designating a smoking zone, but it has not been completely banned. Students may smoke in their rooms or specific places. The notice is simply a reminder of the existing law," he said.
Earlier, on June 27 this year, Sir AF Rahman Hall authority banned smoking in public spaces within the hall compound.
