Shafiqur Rahman sworn in as Jamaat ameer for third consecutive term
Shafiqur Rahman was sworn in for the third consecutive term as the ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at a ceremony in Dhaka this evening.
The Jamaat chief, elected for the 2026–2028 term, became emotional and broke down in tears several times while taking the oath.
ATM Masum, a central executive council member and assistant secretary general of the party, administered the oath at the Al-Falah auditorium in Moghbazar. Masum also served as the chief election commissioner.
The ameer was elected through a secret ballot held between October 9 and 25, in which 116,792 rukon (oath-bound members) cast their votes. Shafiqur was elected after securing the highest number of votes.
The oath-taking ceremony was part of the two-day annual session of the party's Majlish-e-Shura.
Top leaders from various political parties, as well as Jamaat's central executive council, central working committee and Majlish-e-Shura members, were present.
In his remarks, Shafiqur said he did not consider himself worthy of the responsibility.
"There are many more capable, skilled and experienced colleagues in this organisation who were nurtured by our previous leaders. I do not know why the respected members entrusted me with this responsibility," he said.
