It was 5:00pm on April 2, 1762. Along the Chattogram coastline, there was an extremely loud sound of a huge explosion, followed by a severe earthquake.
Many hills were split in Chattogram and the Hill Tracts.
A powerful tsunami in the Bay of Bengal claimed the lives of at least 200 people.
Deep cracks appeared throughout the city.
The magnitude of that earthquake, from Chattogram to then-Arakan, was between 8.5 and 8.8 on the Richter scale. It remains the most devastating earthquake in the history of Bangladesh.
