Interim govt issues gazette categorising all government colleges
The interim government has classified all 708 government colleges across the country into four distinct categories– A, B, C and D.
The Secondary and Higher Education Division (SHED) under the Ministry of Education issued a gazette notification in this regard yesterday (Monday).
According to the notification, the colleges have been classified based on their student enrolment numbers and the number of honours courses offered.
Under the new classification, 81 renowned institutions have been placed in Category A. To qualify for this top tier, an institution must have a student body exceeding 8,000 and offer more than 10 honours subjects.
This list features the country's most prominent institutions, including Dhaka College, Rajshahi College, Eden Mohila College, Comilla Victoria Government College, Carmichael College in Rangpur, and others.
Category B comprises 74 colleges. Institutions in this group have between 4,500 and 7,999 students and offer more than five honours subjects.
This category includes specialised and well-established district-level institutions. Notable examples include the Government College of Applied Human Science (formerly Home Economics College) in Dhaka and Government Begum Rokeya College in Rangpur.
The highest number of institutions–446 in total–have been placed in Category C. These colleges have a student enrolment of fewer than 4,500 and offer between one and four honours subjects. The majority of upazila-level government colleges fall into this category.
Meanwhile, 107 colleges have been labelled as Category D, which are dedicated solely to the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) level and do not offer tertiary education (honours or masters).
Prominent examples in this category include Azimpur Govt Girls School and College in Dhaka and Rajshahi Government model school and College.
