EC opens dialogue with political parties ahead of national election
The Election Commission (EC) began its electoral dialogue this morning, holding meetings with 12 political parties on the opening day as part of its broader consultation process ahead of the upcoming national election.
The first session, starting from 10:00am, will continue up to 12:00pm, followed by a second session from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at the Bangladesh Election Commission office in Agargaon, Dhaka.
At the start of the dialogue, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin emphasised that "There are 54 registered parties, and all 54 are equal to us. We need well-thought-out suggestions and opinions from the parties on what can be done before, during, and after the election."
Addressing the political parties, Nasir Uddin remarked, "You are the ones contesting the election; you are the players. We want to remain in the role of the referee. Without your cooperation, it will be difficult to play that role or to hold a fair election."
"To ensure a free, fair, and credible election, the cooperation of political parties is essential. If we do not get support from the main players, the election will inevitably come under question."
Referring to the widespread use of posters across Dhaka city, the CEC said, "We have declared posters illegal, yet the city is filled with them. These must be removed. Those who have put them up should take them down. Once the election schedule is announced, we will take stern action."
On the issue of a possible referendum, the CEC noted that the EC had not been officially informed, though discussions were ongoing. "Even as it stands, the election is being held under a special government in a special situation. On top of that, several additional responsibilities have been bestowed upon us," he said.
Explaining the timing of the dialogue, the CEC said the plan had been made long ago but was delayed to avoid overlapping with discussions led by the National Consensus Commission on electoral reforms.
According to the EC's final list, the morning session included the Liberal Democratic Party, Bangladesh Congress, Bangladesh Muslim League, National People's Party, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, and Jamiat Ulamaye Islam Bangladesh.
Communist Party of Bangladesh, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD), Bangladesher Biplobi Workers Party, Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF), and Bangladesh Nationalist Movement (BNM) will attend the afternoon session.
