Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has intensified surveillance along the Satkhira frontier after reports surfaced of "unregistered" individuals gathering near the India-Bangladesh border during India's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of its voter list.

The Satkhira battalion (33 BGB) said in a statement today that India's SIR programme began on November 4 and will continue until December 4. As part of the exercise, officials in West Bengal are conducting door-to-door visits to verify voters' nationality and eligibility.

According to Indian media reports, groups of people labelled as "Bangladeshi" have assembled in Tarali, Hakimpur, and other areas under Basirhat subdivision in North 24 Parganas, reportedly fearing actions linked to nationality verification. Many among them -- including women and children -- initially struggled with shortages of food and drinking water after local traders refused to sell to them. Supplies were later provided by local representatives and social organisations.

In response, BGB has strengthened patrolling, intelligence efforts, and overall vigilance to ensure stability along the border. Local Ansar and VDP personnel have also been tasked with gathering information, while communication with residents of border villages has been increased.

"We have intensified patrols along with increasing intelligence operations," said Lt Col Md Ashraful Haque, commanding officer of 33 BGB, adding that the force remains fully alert to handle any potential situation.
